Objective & Description

Following the UNFCCC decision at its 17th session to adopt National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Burkina Faso developed a NAP covering sectors like agriculture, livestock, environment, energy, health, infrastructure, and water security, with input from the Global Water Partnership West Africa and Burkina National Water Partnership.

To support NAP implementation, the government, through the Executive Secretariat of the National Designated Authority (NDA) and GGGI, mobilized a program funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The program focuses on integrating climate adaptation into subnational planning, strengthening institutional frameworks, and developing funding strategies. It aims to address gaps in governance and institutional coordination of the NAP at both national and local levels.

The Project’s objective is to revise the regional development plan for the Centre-Ouest region, integrating gender-responsive adaptation based on vulnerability and risk assessments, along with training on gender-responsive planning.
Specifically, the project aimed to:
The overall objective of this study is to integrate adaptation to climate change into the planning of the Centre West region of Burkina Faso, to strengthen institutional frameworks and to develop a financing strategy and concept notes for adaptation projects.

Specifically, the study aims to :
– Carry out a study on climate vulnerability and risks in the Central West region with a view to providing the data needed to support the definition of better adaptation options that promote gender equality;
– To train and build the capacity of stakeholders in the Centre-West region in terms of climate vulnerability and risks, as well as raising their awareness of the interrelationship between gender issues and climate vulnerability;
– To develop a regional adaptation plan and revise the current regional development plan to incorporate gender-sensitive adaptation;
– To develop learning materials on the adaptation planning process for stakeholders in the Central West region;
– To set up a consultative process to involve key stakeholders in the Central West region in the development and validation of adaptation options.

Services provided by WE&B

WE&B lead this assignment where we successfully developed/delivered the following services:
We managed a core team of local experts in Burkina Faso that assisted in gathering data, holding workshops and engaging local stakeholders to inform the reports that were produced by WE&B. These included:
(i) A report on the assessment of the region’s vulnerability and risks and the analysis of adaptation options;
(ii) A regional adaptation plan and the revised/expanded regional development plan incorporating adaptation;
(iii) A manual on the regional adaptation planning process ;
(iv) A training report (on the vulnerability and risk assessment process; on integrating adaptation into the regional planning process )
