Objective & Description

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an intergovernmental organisation formed in 2008 that seeks to strengthen political, economic, and social relations between the EU and Southern/Eastern Mediterranean countries. Its focus is to foster regional cooperation, stability and sustainable development across the region. Since 2015, UfM has initiated several key actions to strengthen gender equality within the Euro-Mediterranean region.
Despite the work achieved so far, extra efforts are required to empower women in the region, especially considering present and future crises, i.e. Climate Change. Therefore, to kickstart some of these efforts, the Social and Civil Affairs (SCA) Division at UfM has included in its 2024 Work Programme, the development of the UfM Women Community of Practices on the nexus Gender Environment and Climate Change. The goal of this proposal is to set up a CoP where key stakeholders operating in the gender and climate change areas can provide insights into current realities and agree on actionable solutions, within the Mediterranean region.

Services provided by WE&B

Under the Project, WE&B successfully developed/delivered the following services:
• Comprehensive mapping of the existing regional organisations and initiatives focused on climate change and gender, as well as stakeholders.
• Understanding the needs and expectations regarding the CoP through consultations and interviews.
• To set up and coordinate the CoP . This task also involves the implementation and management of a social media campaign for the CoP.
• Developed three online capacity building sessions in 2024 and 2025. The first session should be on green female entrepreneurship and is due to take place in Athens (Greece) by December 2024. The second and third sessions should be on climate finance and climate policies, in May and October 2025, but the venues are yet to be determined.
